It brought to mind other films considered classics that explore similar themes of growing up, like Amarcord or even Fanny and Alexander by Bergman. The story unfolds over a year, around 1970, depicting the experiences of an educated, middle-class family as observed through the perspective of their household employee, Cleo. She originates from a rural area, has indigenous heritage, and is employed in a system—frequently found in less developed regions—where workers are positioned somewhere between a beloved older sibling and someone held in servitude. While she develops an affectionate bond with the children, it’s a two-way connection built on complicated terms, as she lacks basic protections for laborers. I believe this intricate dynamic is what makes the movie so powerful. For those of us who were fortunate enough to have been cared for by women like her, the film provides a deeply moving experience. Everyone else should make an effort to see it; it's essential viewing.
