Norman Jewison and William Harrison adapted Harrison’s short story into a feature film, and the outcome is quite good. The narrative unfolds in 2018 within a world structured as a global corporate state, controlled by six dominant cartels. Eliminating war and poverty, these organizations manage public discontent through Rollerball, an extremely violent sporting event where competitors show no mercy. However, when Jonathan E, the sport’s leading athlete, begins to act independently and outgrows the confines of the competition, the corporations decide they want him gone… James Caan delivers a fantastic performance as Jonathan, and the acting across the board is excellent. The cinematography is impressive, and the action sequences during the games are skillfully arranged. Classical music is effectively incorporated alongside the story’s themes to complement the complex plot, while the dialogue is intelligent and demands careful attention from the audience. It would be unfair to say that the film loses some momentum when it isn't focused on Rollerball matches; viewers will need to exercise patience and appreciate the sophisticated presentation to fully enjoy it. This is a skillfully made dystopian science fiction movie with intelligence, cleverness, and plenty of intense action. 7.5/10
