Rocky IV marks the first time a movie in the series has let me down. The film suffers from some serious issues with its tone. It attempts to tell a sad story, driven by Apollo Creed’s death, but also includes silly moments featuring a robot housekeeper. I didn't appreciate how detached things felt as a result of this. This was also the movie that elicited the fewest feelings from me. It seemed like Apollo Creed’s character took a step backward; he underestimated Ivan Drago just as he had with Rocky initially. The sense of quiet understanding he showed in Rocky III was gone, and he seemed focused solely on putting on a show. I considered this opponent to be the weakest one yet, likely because the central link between the boxers was Apollo’s death, which didn't resonate with me very well. The final fight wasn’t as thrilling as the others, largely because it lacked proper preparation beforehand. The performances are comparable to those in Rocky III, and Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, and Carl Weathers all do good work. However, my earlier criticism of Rocky III still applies here: the main villain is incredibly cheesy and not well-acted. While Drago’s silent, emotionless demeanor was intimidating, it lacked the emotional depth that previous antagonists had. I must mention that I felt there was an excessive amount of 80s music in this film. I did like “Eye of the Tiger,” as in Rocky III, but I missed hearing more of the traditional Rocky musical cues that really enhanced those training sequences. Despite all its shortcomings, I still found some enjoyment in it. Score: 57% Verdict: Decent
