Despite his previous loss, Rocky Balboa and his dependable trainer Mickey (Burgess Meredith) are back for another fight against the confident Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in what is an excellent follow-up. The movie does a commendable job of expanding on the first film’s ideas and introducing some memorable personalities while once again illustrating how boxing represented a path away from poverty for many young people growing up in cities, even during the 1970s. Stallone wrote and directed the picture, effectively portraying the aspirations of that generation—their resolve to achieve success alongside their inherent kindness and commitment to Adrian (Talia Shire). It's difficult to say whether he’s genuinely performing or simply being himself. Ultimately, this is a story about honesty and drive, and while there are some fairly straightforward issues with the plot, they somehow add to the film's sense of realism—flaws and all. The experience culminates in an extended, emotionally charged sequence set to Bill Conti's music as he gathers both familiar supporters and new admirers during his run through the city, leading up to a lengthy and closely observed final confrontation that highlights just how raw boxing can be. It might not appeal to everyone, given that it celebrates something we now consider problematic decades later, but this remains a worthwhile film that holds up remarkably well.
