I stumbled upon this movie unintentionally, and even though quite a while has passed since I experienced the original television series—which serves as the foundation for both that show and these films—I had hoped for a more sophisticated narrative than what I recall from it. This film is pretty disorganized, and it’s evident that the writers and director aren't particularly skilled storytellers. There were moments when I felt lost, and maybe I ought to have revisited the series and the other movies (I believe there was one before this, but I can’t be certain) to better understand the characters and their development. However, from what I could gather, these versions of the characters differ significantly from those in the original show; I'll hold off on that assessment until I do some research, though. The story feels hurried, and while it isn’t a big-budget Hollywood production, the computer-generated imagery occasionally looks artificial. It is still watchable, however. Regarding the plot, they didn’t provide much of a recap for the characters beyond brief mentions and occasional flashbacks. The visuals are certainly an upgrade from the older animated show, but at times the space scenes resemble Babylon 5, and you can almost see where different elements were joined together. At just under ninety minutes long, it really needed another thirty minutes to flesh out the story more effectively. I doubt children aged ten or twelve would find this particularly engaging, but as an adult, I found myself questioning certain aspects—like the accuracy of details, technical terminology, and the plausibility of events. I can’t even recall what they called “proto-whatever” was supposed to be, or its purpose (beyond powering various devices), but that information is probably explained in the show and other films. Like many movies and television programs, this one seems geared toward younger viewers who haven't been exposed to so much media over the years; it’s hard not to compare it to similar things I’ve seen before. If you switch off your critical thinking skills, it can be quite enjoyable, especially if you don’t dwell on backstories or the overall plot and continuity. My younger self would have probably enjoyed this a lot, but as an adult, I just find it fairly ordinary. I'd rate it a 6 out of 10, partly because Mark Hamill is in it, and also for nostalgic reasons.
