The story unfolds in an animal-populated New York City, where a dog leads a rather isolated life. He’s fond of microwavable mac 'n cheese, but when he sees a couple across the way, it sparks a feeling of loneliness within him. A commercial on TV then prompts him to purchase a robotic companion. A large package arrives and what follows is an elaborate construction process that seems almost too complicated. Eventually, he succeeds! They quickly become friends, and a trip to the beach turns out to be enjoyable. However, the robot unexpectedly malfunctions due to a power issue. The dog hurries home for a repair kit, only to discover that he’s locked out until June because it's the end of the season. He attempts several schemes to reach his friend but is unsuccessful and must accept waiting. During this time, we are given insight into the robot’s dreams as he remains motionless on the beach—simple aspirations that help pass the hours while rain, snow, sand, and some unpleasant people surround him. Meanwhile, our dog companion also experiences dreams as he tries to carry on with his life. The ending wasn't what I anticipated, but it resulted in a genuinely touching and believable situation that I believe viewers will find appealing. It’s a film centered around friendship, yearning, and strength of character, presented with adequate animation. While you have to put aside some sense of realism while watching, it provides a rather moving portrayal of how we form, maintain, and move past relationships, making it truly worthwhile seeing in theaters.
