I have to admit, going into this film, I was expecting to be let down. It wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be, though I didn’t find myself particularly wowed either. There are some decent moments, and naturally, the special effects meet modern expectations. However, it misses a lot of what made the original so appealing—the excessive, gory violence and the over-the-top, cartoonish style that defined it. It seems they were after a PG-13 rating to make more money, which is unfortunately not an uncommon way Hollywood ruins a good movie. The initial scenes aren't terrible. I was disappointed by how easily they took out Murphy with a simple car bomb, though; again, the film lacks the harsh and brutal feel of the original. The sequences where Murphy wakes up in the secret research and manufacturing facility and his reaction to discovering what he’s become were enjoyable. After that, it really started going downhill due to some truly awful Hollywood writing. Just ten minutes before Robocop is set to appear publicly, they cram a huge amount of information into his brain? That's just unbelievably clumsy writing. Predictably, things went wrong from there. The special effects are acceptable, but the script remains nonsensical. This supposedly intelligent combat cyborg spends most of his time charging straight into danger and firing away like a Terminator or Rambo imitation. While it leads to some exciting action sequences, it’s still a result of poor writing. And then the ending arrived. What was that supposed to be? I'm not talking about the actual conclusion where Murphy, fortunately, wins out, but the scene afterward with the TV presenter (or whatever his role was) rambling on about traitors and so on. It seemed included purely to signal their hope for a sequel, though the pointless speech didn’t really make much sense. I generally found those scenes with the TV presenter to be just an annoyance. Overall, it's not a terrible movie, but it falls far short of the original’s charm. To a significant degree, this is because it was watered down into something suitable for teenagers who don’t want any harsh language, losing the dark and gory elements that defined the first film. The weak script certainly didn’t help. I'm glad I invested the time to watch it, but my feeling afterward was just…underwhelming.
