I'd get that for a dollar and a dime, easily. It’s a competition won honestly. This ranks among Verhoeven’s best films. There's action, there's satire, and an abundance of bold directing that elevates him beyond Tarantino; Tarantino tends to poke fun at the audience with flat characters, whereas Verhoeven develops everyone in a more complex way. The story depicts a police department falling apart under the influence of crime figures they seem to admire. It’s unsettlingly prescient! Large corporations assert their control over law enforcement by equipping them like soldiers. A single officer, Murphy, finds himself up against the most formidable criminal, who is quite something else. He might make you chuckle with his appearance and dialogue, but he's extremely dangerous; he even instructs his crew to assist Murphy. The corporation’s leader, an older man nearing retirement as indicated by his second-in-command, Dick, holds a position of power. Dick certainly lives up to his name. A younger newcomer, portrayed by Miguel Ferrer, who functions as something of an antihero, isn't intimidated by "Dick." You might recognize some of the well-known moments, and you’ve almost certainly heard the iconic line “I’d buy that for a dollar,” which is intentionally absurd and has become exactly that. Peter Weller plays Murphy, with Nancy Allen as his dependable police partner who allows one of the antagonists to incapacitate her, though she does reappear later. The film's dark humor contributes significantly to its status as a classic.
