They’ll make things right. They correct everything. On Officer Murphy’s first day patrolling Detroit’s streets, he is killed by Clarence Boddicker, a notorious criminal leader. Scientists working for OCP are then able to use what was left of Murphy's body and construct a new cyborg police officer, heavily armed and intended to eliminate crime permanently. Paul Verhoeven has been described with many labels throughout his career—eccentric, provocative, and imaginative—and in this, his first widely recognized American film, he demonstrates all those qualities. Robocop, on paper and in its title, seemed like just another standard science fiction action movie; the basic idea didn’t exactly suggest groundbreaking originality. However, Verhoeven had screenwriters Edward Neumeier & Michael Miner collaborating with him, and they produced a script that fully realized his vision. It is now generally accepted that Robocop offers a satirical commentary on totalitarianism and corporate malfeasance. Yet, initially, this wasn't obvious to audiences seeking summer entertainment; still, the film has proven its staying power through repeated critical analysis and deeper examinations. With the script he desired in place, Verhoeven drew upon childhood memories of his Netherlands home being occupied by German forces, incorporating a sense of devastation alongside impressive technical skill. Verhoeven creates an unsettling depiction of Detroit (the actual filming took place in Texas), filled with skewed camera angles and strange occurrences; even now, the special effects are remarkable. Robocop contains significant violence, particularly in the director’s cut that is readily accessible today. Even during the most uncomfortable moments, however, the pacing remains quick and engaging, aided by characters who are as detached from humanity as the cyborg protagonist himself. This combination of intense science fiction action with human realism works effectively, demonstrating Verhoeven's skill as a director. Peter Weller wears the Robo suit (apparently enduring considerable physical discomfort for weeks) and performs adequately, while Nancy Allen is spirited as Murphy’s partner, Anne Lewis. But it is with the unpleasant characters that Robocop achieves its strongest acting performances. Ronny Cox, Miguel Ferrer, and Kurtwood Smith, playing a particularly nasty role, stand out, greatly benefiting from the quality of the writing. Verhoeven is considered a demanding director, pushing everyone involved, even prompting Weller to consider violent reactions toward him. However, nearly all those who worked on Robocop now agree that the final product was worth the effort, because together they created a genre classic. 9/10
