Dan O’Herlihy delivers a strong performance as the man who finds himself stranded on a tropical island, needing to adjust to survive. He manages to recover some vital items from his wrecked ship, and through resourcefulness and willpower, he manages to build a life – albeit a basic one – that lasts for many years. Eventually, he saves a local man, "Friday" (Jaime Fernández), from another island where he was headed toward being eaten. For the majority of the film, there isn’t much conversation; instead, we observe “Crusoe” as he adjusts to his solitary existence, balancing on the edge between losing his mind and accepting that staying alive is preferable. The development of his connection with his later friend also works well and is quite entertaining, and the conclusion remains faithful to the original novel – a detail which highlights the fact that there *is* an original book. This is a pleasant version of Daniel Defoe’s tale; it's filmed in vibrant colors (in Mexico) and deserves to be seen.
