Patrick Bergin takes on the role of Lincoln Green in this film, portraying a Saxon fighting against the Normans who are trying to take their land and impose heavy taxes. He’s up against “Folcanet” (Jürgen Prochnow), a threatening figure with designs on both Robin and Marian, the niece of the local sheriff "Daguerre" (Jeroen Krabbé). Initially, Robin and Daguerre were allies, but an incident in the forest, fueled by Folcanet’s actions, changes that. Forced into exile and accompanied only by “Will” (Owen Teale), they encounter others seeking refuge in the woods, forming a group that becomes a significant problem for those in power just as Prince John (Edward Fox) is preparing to arrive and collect 50,000 marks. The stage is now set for a major confrontation aimed at preventing Marian from being forced into marriage and freeing the region from Norman taxation. This adventure follows familiar territory, and the production has a rough, realistic feel. However, the casting choices are quite jarring. While perhaps an attempt was made to create an international flavor through varied accents, it mostly comes across like a European Western with excessive dialogue and not enough action. Some films simply didn’t need to be remade, and unfortunately, this is one of them.
