Dark Jedi on Roald Dahl's The Witches

· Apr 5, 2021

I didn't share the widespread opinion about this film; I found it to be a pretty good family movie. It wasn’t exceptional, but certainly acceptable, and I did enjoy watching it. The plot is what you would expect. Being based on a Roald Dahl story, it has some darkness mixed with humor and moments of brightness. Naturally, there are people complaining that the tone is too dark for children. However, everyone should be aware of what to anticipate from a Roald Dahl adaptation by now; if not, perhaps another film would suit them better. My kids, even when they were younger, wouldn’t have had any issues with this movie—and I always made sure to watch it alongside them. That's just part of being a parent. The initial scenes felt slightly slow, but things picked up considerably once the head witch and especially the three mice appeared; that’s when it became genuinely funny. My main criticism is that the acting by the witches was overly theatrical, particularly the head witch. They could have dialed it back to make her more frightening; as it stands, she just comes across as silly and a little irritating. The special effects were quite well done. The mice seemed a bit cartoonish, but that worked for this kind of movie. I appreciated how the head witch’s mouth would occasionally split open to reveal her “witchiness.” Apparently, several disability advocates, including British Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren, became very upset and claimed the film was "perpetuating bias against individuals with ectrodactyly and other limb differences." Really? Calm down. It's fiction and a family movie about witches! Depicting witches or supernatural beings as having “abnormalities” like crows feet, fangs, and so on is what defines them. If these overly sensitive people and cancel culture activists had their way, no worthwhile movies or books would ever be created. Ultimately, I consider it an hour and 45 minutes that I enjoyed.
