The involvement of Robert Zemeckis, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron raised expectations for a visually interesting film. Combining their talents with Dahl's stories had the potential to be truly remarkable, but instead it feels like just another uninspired adaptation. The more closely you examine it in relation to the original book and earlier versions, the clearer it becomes that it lacks distinction and doesn’t quite hit its target. This applies equally to the impressive cast featuring Hathaway and Octavia Spencer, with Stanley Tucci as a character who simply fades into the background. It seemed possible this group could create something genuinely different, but unfortunately, that isn't what happened.
