John Chard on Road to Rio

7/10 · Feb 4, 2020

The film Road to Rio, helmed by Norman McLeod and scripted by Edmund Beloin and Jack Rose, features Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Gale Sondergaard, and Frank Faylen. Robert Emmett handled the music, with cinematography by Ernest Laszlo. Hope and Crosby portray two performers who, after inadvertently causing a fire at a circus, sneak aboard a ship headed for Brazil. Upon arrival, they find themselves involved with a woman (Lamour) being pressured into marriage against her will by a manipulative guardian. This installment in the well-loved “Road To” film series sticks to the established formula, which is perfectly acceptable for those familiar with it; however, newcomers might find it perplexing. It’s true that this particular entry has a reasonably strong storyline at its heart, utilizing hypnotism as the primary tool of the antagonist. McLeod manages to weave together the comedy and musical sequences effectively while maintaining a lively tempo. Hope delivers some amusing jokes relevant to the time, and Crosby sings, also performing a song with The Andrews Sisters. Sondergaard is excellent in her role as an unforgettable villainess, and The Wiere Brothers contribute to the humor within the story. Beginning with a strong start, progressing through a cheerful central portion, and culminating in a genuinely funny ending, Road to Rio provides everything that fans of the "Road To" movies would want. It earns a rating of 7.5/10.
