Sam Mendes’s film with Tom Hanks as “Mike,” a man working for the "Rooney" crime family led by “John” (Paul Newman), is likely my top pick from his work, and definitely my favorite to feature Hanks. It takes a little while to get going, but the suspense increases steadily as the two men on the run form a connection while taking money from those they’re pursuing, getting even with them, and teaching the boy how to drive. There are some elements that don't quite work – Jude Law’s character, "Maguire," feels almost like something out of a comic book, and Newman is present but not very often – although most of the characters do evolve in an interesting way, and the bond between father and son deepens until the final fifteen minutes, which I found rather underwhelming. The dialogue isn't particularly inspired, and the story felt somewhat foreseeable, but it’s visually striking: the meticulousness in everything from the vehicles to the clothing and the overall feel of the movie creates a sense of realism that I appreciated.
