The remake of Road House adheres to predictable and shallow storytelling, yet alterations to the plot and the introduction of more interesting characters elevate the film beyond what might be expected. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a standout performance – physically as well as otherwise – and the actors involved demonstrate great rapport. Conor McGregor’s first acting role is a particular surprise, bringing an unpredictable and remarkably energetic presence to the movie. While the action set pieces occasionally feel overly flashy, they are generally effective. Deeper exploration of the characters, particularly within the romantic storyline, would have been beneficial; however, it still provides an enjoyable experience for viewers at home. Rating: B-
