Wuchak on Risky Business

5/10 · Dec 11, 2018

“Risky Business,” released in 1983, features Tom Cruise as a privileged teenager living in the suburbs of Chicago. After his parents go away, he finds himself alone and hires a prostitute (Rebecca De Mornay), which sets off a chain of both funny and difficult events. The movie is known for the memorable scene where Cruise performs a lip-sync to Bob Seger’s "Old Time Rock and Roll." It's something many people can relate to, I suppose. “Risky Business” shares some similarities with “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” but it also has an aesthetic quality reminiscent of “Less than Zero,” though without the sadness that film carries. As a piece of simple entertainment, it’s easily a 7/10, but I have to mark it down because of how prostitution is presented. I understand this is a teen comedy and you need to go along with things to appreciate it, which I did manage to do. However, the depiction of sex work and those who engage in it feels completely unrealistic and I consider it misleading and not well-thought-out. Do these men really only desire women who have sexual encounters with numerous people daily? Am I alone in finding that disturbing? Shouldn’t there be some worry about sexually transmitted diseases? Wouldn't a lifestyle like prostitution take a toll on the women involved, both mentally and emotionally? Wouldn't you see signs of it? Naturally, none of these aspects are explored. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 39 minutes and was filmed in Highland Park, Illinois, and around Chicago. GRADE: C
