The arrival of Col. Yorke’s (John Wayne) son, Jeff (Claude Jarman Jr.), at his military post complicates matters enough while he's already dealing with Apache raids. Things get even more complicated when the boy’s mother, Kathleen (Maureen O’Hara), shows up wanting to purchase the land. It becomes clear that their marriage is experiencing difficulties, and the young man isn’t planning on leaving his assignment, which leads to some amusing tension as the parents argue their way back toward affection. The movie follows a familiar path, but the chemistry between Wayne and O'Hara provides enjoyment, along with a dependable group of supporting actors in roles like Chill Wills', Victor McLaglen as the hard-drinking "Quicannon," and Fred Kennedy’s large “Trooper Heinze.” There is sufficient action throughout, and the leads ensure that any romantic elements are portrayed with spirited disagreement and very little sentimentality. John Ford demonstrated a knack for casting and creating engaging westerns, and he delivers on that here.
