This film presented an earlier version of John Wayne, before he became known for playing those gruff, older characters in many of his later films. Here, his character, Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, seemed more sensitive than some of his usual roles, and there was a noticeable romantic element—at least based on my experience with his movies. I wasn’t initially convinced I would enjoy it so much, given its classification as both a romance and a Western. However, I can confidently say that I liked it considerably. It remains a classic Western, complete with fights, brawls, and plenty of gunplay. Wayne delivers a strong performance, and many of the supporting actors are quite entertaining. The old Sergeant Major was particularly memorable, and I wished there had been a more formal scene showing reconciliation between him and Mrs. Yorke. There were numerous pleasant exchanges between the Sergeant Major and other characters throughout the film; at times these interactions made the movie genuinely funny because of the unique personalities involved. My understanding is that John Ford was essentially obligated by Republic Pictures to direct this film, as a condition for them producing his preferred project, *The Quiet Man*. I believe it was a smart decision on the studio’s part, even though the film was produced with a limited budget, even for its time. The only regret I have is that it was filmed in black and white. Like many classic Westerns, there's beautiful natural scenery, and I think some of it would have been more impressive in color. Also, something strikes me as odd: why did they put John Wayne on the movie poster without a mustache when he wears one throughout the entire film?
