Richard Boone might not be known for his range as an actor, yet he manages to carry this Western reasonably well. His portrayal of “Lassiter” is that of someone burdened by history who has joined forces with “Capt. Haven” (Stuart Whitman) and the questionable “Rodriguez” (Anthony Franciosa) in a venture involving illicit firearms being smuggled to the Apache. Following a near-fatal attack, they take “Sally” (Wende Wagner) into their custody, and her presence introduces complications for this unlikely group as they journey toward the unfinished residence of Confederate “Col. Anderson” (Warner Anderson). He envisions reviving the civil war—with the vengeful “Bloodshirt” (Rodolfo Acosta) and his warriors serving as instruments in his plan. It becomes apparent that while these men, including “Franklyn” (Jim Brown), are ostensibly seeking gold, each is driven by separate motivations as they fend off pursuing Native Americans and then must deal with a soldier whose perception of things seems somewhat unstable. The plot follows a familiar pattern, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing: it combines elements of chase, siege, retribution, and a subtle romantic subplot leading to an explosive finale that proves effective. Whitman's performance is unremarkable, but Brown and Anderson provide noteworthy supporting roles, and the narrative focuses more on developing personalities than simply showcasing expected action sequences. The pacing can be deliberate at times, but I found it enjoyable observing these seasoned performers at work.
