There’s nothing inherently wrong with *Rio 2*, but it feels like a dull continuation of the first movie from 2011. It is visually bright and clearly made with good intentions. The storyline mostly consists of familiar family conflicts—the usual disagreements between relatives and romantic tensions. The narrative also lacks surprises, which doesn’t do it any favors. Some characters from the earlier film are awkwardly included, Nigel (voiced by Jemaine Clement) being a prime example. Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway return as Blu and Jewel, respectively, with Eisenberg delivering a stronger performance. Bruno Mars is part of the cast; I appreciated his vocal work for Roberto, but the character itself isn't memorable. I imagine that younger audiences will find enjoyment in it, along with others. For my taste, though, it’s simply unremarkable.
