The latest installment of the series sidelines Samara to an extent that, frankly, I'm struggling to recall what the focus actually was. This 2017 entry incorporates digital files but overlooks the existence of the internet in a continuation that feels superfluous. It’s hard to believe none of the characters would have attempted to share the video online via platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. The narrative wanders off on an extended tangent intended, apparently, to revitalize the series, yet it ultimately just drifts along until the predictable resolution. Samara, the unsettling dancer and deceased girl who is central to the concept, has very limited screen time, which is disappointing. I initially thought a rating of 4 out of 10 would be harsh, so I settled on 5 out of 10; while it’s somewhat dull and lacks genuine scares, it's not poorly constructed as a film. It just isn’t particularly engaging.
