It seems improbable that Leni Riefenstahl would ever openly discuss her possible involvement in the Holocaust—whether through direct action or inaction—but this documentary attempts to reconstruct the life of this remarkable and mysterious filmmaker using an impressive assortment of archival footage, much of which comes from her own work. Her on-screen presence evokes a sense similar to Greta Garbo, and it's easy to understand why she attracted the attention, and apparently the affections, of figures like Josef Goebbels. It appears that Hitler himself quickly recognized the value of her artistic abilities, elevating her to a prominent position within the Reich. As war began, she was compelled to direct her talents toward promoting the Nazi war effort, which is where questions surrounding the mass killings and cremations start to become central to this examination of her perspective. Considering the sensitive subject matter and the sheer volume of material available, I must confess that I was somewhat let down by the documentary's organization. It feels disjointed and could have benefited from a more focused narration. There’s simply too much information for viewers to sort through, and many elements contradict each other; some clarification would have been helpful given the extensive collection of documents, reports, and investigations presented. However, the visuals—particularly those depicting athletes embodying an ideal of Aryan physical perfection—are undeniably striking in their impact on a population yearning for hope. It’s true that looking back makes judgments seem more straightforward than they were at the time, and as she herself says, no one wanted to challenge Hitler initially, and afterward, nobody dared—and I believe this offers some insight into how precarious and expendable even her position became as the war progressed and her usefulness diminished. We may never know the full extent of her involvement or lack thereof, and honestly, after watching for ninety minutes, I don’t feel significantly more informed than when I started, other than recognizing that she was a clever and compelling woman who went along with what was happening.
