Randolph Scott isn’t typically someone I'd consider to be particularly strong, but he delivers an excellent performance in this stylish western centered around revenge. He portrays a bounty hunter named "Ben" who takes “Billy John” (James Best) into custody for murder. His intention is to bring him in, although his true goal is to find and confront Frank, Billy’s brother (Lee Van Cleef), because of some unresolved issues from the past. Along the way, he saves "Carrie" (Karen Steele) from an unusual group of Native Americans and joins forces with "Sam" (Pernell Roberts) and "Whit" (James Coburn) to improve their odds against the brothers who are clearly on their trail. There isn't a huge amount of suspense in the narrative, but it develops at a measured pace and works well; Van Cleef is completely comfortable acting within this genre. Budd Boetticher keeps things moving briskly as well. The film’s runtime is just under seventy-five minutes, with very little romantic subplot and several gunfights leading to an ending that felt appropriate—though maybe a bit hurried. It's a solid illustration of how simplicity can be effective, and it would definitely be worth seeing in a theater if you have the opportunity – the cinematography looks especially good when viewed on a large screen.
