I’ve recently committed myself to exploring films made before 1970 from different countries, especially genres I haven't given much attention to previously, like musicals, war movies and westerns. And it has really broadened my understanding of what cinema can be. It’s remarkable how truly excellent some of these older pictures are. Because film is the most important thing in my life, I also gather books about movies, always looking for information. As that old Calvin Klein commercial used to say, 'A man has many loves, but only one Obsession'. A surprisingly good and affordable discovery was ‘The Editors of American Cowboy’s The Top 100 Westerns of All Time,’ published in 2011. This film appeared at number 52, and the description sounded interesting, so I've been looking out for it ever since. Just last month, I found a collection of Randolph Scott westerns at a very reasonable price, and I decided to buy it. This one was outstanding and definitely lives up to its high ranking. There’s an incredible amount of action, suspense and visual appeal in Burt Kennedy's script, all packed into 72 minutes. Each camera angle is carefully arranged and beautifully shot. It's hard to imagine a film with a better group of supporting actors. Of course, the lengthy films by directors like David Lean and Victor Fleming are impressive too, but I’d prefer to watch a straightforward story that’s told exceptionally well rather than those overly long and pretentious movies you see now. That's what I want people to remember about me. I almost felt it deserved a perfect score; it's really THAT good.
