This marks Helen Hunt’s second time directing, and she also appears in a significant part of this story centered on their relationship. I am puzzled by the low ratings it received; personally, I found it to be an unusual film that explored the connection between parents and children with genuine feeling. It reminded me somewhat of 'The Guilt Trip'. I believe only women directors can create movies like this. Perhaps this film resonated with me because I'm naturally inclined to feel empathy for older generations’ difficulties. Regardless, I appreciated Helen Hunt’s performance; her character wasn't struggling so much as trying to maintain a connection with her son as he sought independence. This is a common experience—a parent’s affection for their child wanting to move out and start their own life. I find these kinds of themes endearing and emotionally impactful. The direction itself was not the issue, but the writing felt lacking at times. Helen Hunt isn't necessarily a strong writer, and some scenes were quite bland and lacked emotional depth, although the focus remained on a mother trying to understand her son’s choices. There were moments that brought some levity to the film. I would have liked to score it higher, but I can’t. However, I would suggest this movie to anyone looking for something about family dynamics—not necessarily marital conflicts, but rather the relationship between parents and their children, similar to what I mentioned earlier. 7/10
