The film presents an ordinary portrayal of family life, following "April" (played by Kate Winslet) as she manages their children while her husband, "Frank" (Leonardo DiCaprio), works and engages in affairs with his secretary. April, seemingly a disappointed actress, experienced a poorly received stage performance that contributes to the couple's frequent arguments. Feeling they need significant change, she proposes moving to Paris, where she will work and he can relax, read, write, and care for their children. Shortly after announcing this plan, their lives become more chaotic, revealing deep-seated resentment and animosity—signs of underlying psychological distress in April’s character. The narrative gains momentum when Michael Shannon appears; his portrayal of the emotionally intense "John" is notable for his bluntness and ability to pinpoint truths, regardless of the impact on others. The film feels drawn out and slow, with much of the dialogue failing to meaningfully develop either the plot or the characters. At times, it resembles a collection of stylishly photographed mid-life crises set in 1950s America, though the setting could realistically be anywhere. Several recognizable actors appear in supporting roles, and some close-up scenes featuring DiCaprio and Winslet are impactful, but I felt it bordered on melodrama. It's probably worth seeing, although I’m unsure what the intended groundbreaking aspect was.
