In 1897, a missionary’s widow and her two young children find themselves marooned on a beautiful island in the South Pacific. As they mature, the youngsters discover both the positive aspects and potential hazards of living on their secluded home, including matters of reproduction. Milla Jovovich and Brian Krause portray the pair of adolescents, with Nana Coburn also appearing in the cast. “Return to the Blue Lagoon” (1991) serves as a follow-up to the 1980 film, but it failed to find success at the box office; this was probably because it’s essentially a rehash of an earlier story. I personally like this version better for several reasons, including the enjoyable final portion and simply my preference for Milla Jovovich over Brooke Shields—I never connected with the latter actress. Both films were adapted from Henry De Vere Stacpoole's trilogy, though this one takes more liberties than the first. There are parallels to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Tarzan of the Apes,” which implies that Burroughs drew inspiration from “The Blue Lagoon” since it was published in 1908, six years before “Tarzan” (though Burroughs insists his only influence came from the Roman legend of Romulus and Remus). (Right.) This is a well-executed and believable island drama/adventure/romance that doesn’t warrant its negative reputation. If you enjoy films about people stranded on islands—like "Mysterious Island" (1961), “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan” (1984) and “Six Days Seven Nights” (1998)—you should definitely check it out. It simply lacks the fantastical or comedic elements and is more similar to “Crusoe” (1988) and "Lord of the Flies" (1990). The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 42 minutes, and was filmed on Taveuni Island, Fiji. GRADE: B
