Barry Jones’s “Pastor Corbett” depicts how Barry Jones’s character governs a small Pacific island with strict religious authority until Gary Cooper, as "Morgan," appears. He disregards the established rules and has no desire to follow the preacher's guidelines. The preacher’s opposition to outside influence gains backing from the local population, leading to an uprising. A period of calm follows the shift in power, but then World War II disrupts their lives when a downed American plane lands on the island—and soon everyone seems eager for conflict. The initial friction between Cooper and Jones is engaging, however, it doesn't last, leaving behind a fairly ordinary love story that felt lengthy to me, particularly the drawn-out romantic interactions between Cooper and Roberta Haynes’s "Maeva." If you appreciate stories about characters changing for the better, perhaps this will appeal to you—but I found that what initially made the film compelling faded away too rapidly. The scenery of Samoa is quite lovely, though.
