Return to Oz is acceptable, but I didn’t find myself enjoying it very much. I appreciated the darker tone present early on; it was unexpected and a pleasant surprise. However, beyond that initial impression, there wasn't much for me to like. The world of Oz itself lacked the sense of wonder it should have conveyed, and I found the non-human characters uninteresting. Regarding the actors, Jean Marsh as Princess Mombi was the only performance that genuinely entertained me—she’s quite good. Otherwise, there wasn't much else that stood out. Fairuza Balk is adequate as Dorothy; she delivers a serviceable performance, especially considering her age. The Wheelers are somewhat intriguing, and their appearance is striking. It's disappointing how little use they make of the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man—I’m actually relieved about the last one, because his design was terrible. I understand why these characters aren't more prominent, given the book series it draws from, but it feels like an unnecessary alteration, particularly with characters like Billina, Tik-Tok, and Jack Pumpkinhead being so underwhelming. I understand that this film is supposedly faithful to the original books, which is commendable. Nevertheless, a movie’s primary purpose should be to function as a good movie—and in my view, it doesn't quite achieve that goal. Each person will have their own perspective, naturally!
