I'm not the toughest critic when it comes to romantic comedies; I tend to enjoy them if they have clever writing, characters that are easy to root for, don’t talk down to me, and wrap things up in a satisfying way—otherwise, I don’t think it really counts as a rom-com. I watched this film quite some time ago, but had forgotten enough of the details to still find it enjoyable. As with many films, the storyline depends on several unlikely events happening. There are moments where the story becomes overly sweet and emotional, and it's fairly easy to guess what’s going to happen next. I also found there was a bit too much religion for my taste, though that might appeal to some viewers. Bonnie Hunt, who also appears in a smaller role, co-wrote and directed the movie. Despite its flaws, there is a noticeable connection between the two main actors, the writing has a certain cleverness, and it benefits from a strong supporting cast including Jim Belushi, Robert Loggia, and Carroll O’Connor—not Archie Bunker! I've been fond of Minnie Driver ever since *Circle of Friends*. Just remember that this isn’t in the same league as films by Hitchcock or Frank Capra, and it doesn't attempt to be. Just relax and let it play out.
