I thought this was a worthwhile film and found myself entertained by it. Still, I can’t imagine revisiting it anytime soon; it gave me a sense of déjà vu. That makes sense to me because stories about women—even famous ones—tend to follow similar patterns regarding difficult fathers and problematic marriages. Cliches exist for a reason: many situations are so commonplace that they become predictable. What would have made the film even better, in my opinion, was if it had offered some unexpected twists concerning how those characters were depicted; I felt they lacked depth. There were a few moments that did catch me off guard—like Aretha’s response to the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, a scene with her father towards the end, and other scattered instances. For the most part, though, it all seemed recognizable. Despite this, I do appreciate the movie and would suggest seeing it.
