This film marks the fifth entry in the Resident Evil sequence. The question arises: why would anyone choose to watch this, or any other Resident Evil movie? Strong performances…not really. A clever and captivating storyline…certainly not. Zombies…yes, definitely. Action…absolutely present! Anything else…well, if you’re part of the younger male demographic, you're likely drawn in by Milla Jovovich as well. Having set the standard for what to expect, does this movie actually succeed? The answer is a clear yes. It provided precisely what I anticipated. As noted, it's the fifth film based on a video game series, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the experience feels like one extended action sequence occasionally broken up by dialogue. Still, many seem to expect something different and evaluate the movie against those unreal expectations. I believe those very low ratings are quite unjust. It does provide what I think viewers should reasonably anticipate: a great deal of action. The slow-motion moments are handled well and prove enjoyable, unlike in some films where they simply become irritating. The zombies and other creatures are effectively presented. And yes, I’ll admit that, though I'm no longer part of the younger male audience, I appreciate seeing Milla Jovovich leaping around in those outlandish, skin-tight outfits. If I were to register a complaint, it would be about enduring the first half of the film while feeling frustrated that nobody realized how simple it was to remove that red mind control device from Jill’s chest. When it finally happened, it felt like an obvious realization arriving late: “Did it really take you so long to grasp that idea, you clueless individuals?” I can't award this movie a top score because the narrative is rather thin, but I do think it deserves 7 out of 10 stars. I had a very enjoyable time watching it. The conclusion follows the typical video game movie formula with a cliffhanger, and I sincerely hope they produce another sequel now that Alice has regained her powers—her losing them was one of the biggest disappointments in an earlier installment.
