Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) moves the series toward a completely devastated world, though the way this is done isn't entirely successful. There are some intriguing concepts within the narrative, such as the storyline involving cloning, but these aren’t explored in enough detail and struggle to hold attention. The beginning feels excessively long, the middle section improves somewhat, and while the ending has a few distinctive elements, it doesn’t quite have the impact that was necessary. It seems like visual presentation took precedence over meaningful content, which could have been more effective if the film had better pacing. The directing and editing are problematic, creating action sequences that are difficult to follow. The shaky camera work returns, and this time it's even worse than in Apocalypse, making certain scenes nearly impossible to view. Frequent jarring cuts also contribute to a disjointed feel, as though the action is presented in fragments instead of a continuous flow. Despite these issues, there are some visually appealing shots, particularly when showcasing the desert landscape, and the final confrontation at least attempts something different. Milla Jovovich continues to be an essential part of what makes the film watchable. Even when the story falters, she manages to keep things reasonably entertaining with her strong screen presence and well-choreographed action sequences. The writing doesn't do much to enhance this, however, featuring underwhelming dialogue and a lack of emotional resonance. The music maintains the industrial rock style, but at this point it comes across as if the series is using aesthetics to mask a shortage of substance. Ultimately, Extinction has some positive aspects, but feels like an action film incorporating zombies rather than a genuine progression from what made the original movie so captivating.
