The premise of “Repli-Kate,” released in 2002, is interesting, drawing parallels to "Weird Science" but with a decidedly less wholesome tone. A student at UCLA, played by James Roday, accidentally produces a clone of a girl he’s interested in (Ali Landry Monteverde). Along with his friend (Desmond Askew), he programs the duplicate to enjoy things like beer, pizza, football, and sex; however, the results aren't what they anticipated. Eugene Levy appears as their professor. Roday is believable as an earnest main character, and Askew provides some amusement as a companion preoccupied with sex, even if he can be a bit grating. Ali Landry, relatively unknown at the time, truly stands out in the role of Kate, both the original and her clone, bringing to mind Nancy Kovack. Her performance alone makes seeing this film worthwhile. The movie’s appeal was diminished for me by what felt like an excess of unpleasantness. A scene involving a group of four people and a dog is just one example. The runtime is 1 hour and 35 minutes, and filming took place at UCLA and in the surrounding area. GRADE: C/C-
