Throughout the years, countless movies, plays, books, comics, video games, and television shows have presented Vampires with differing mythologies that often include variations in behavior, abilities, and motivations. Despite the many portrayals of these creatures, none have attained the legendary status of Dracula, who has served as a standard since Stokers’s novel, the original classic film, and subsequent appearances. The new movie “Renfield” introduces Renfield (Nicholas Holt), who narrates his history as an ambitious lawyer whose initial goal was to finalize a real estate transaction but ended up serving Dracula (Nicolas Cage) as a Familiar. Following another failed attempt by Vampire Hunters that results in injury for his Master, Renfield moves Dracula to New Orleans and seeks out suitable prey to help his boss regain full power. This leads Renfield to a self-help group where he intends to assist the troubled individuals there by using their tormentors as prey for his employer, hoping this will alleviate the burden of decades spent in servitude. This plan goes awry when he tries to subdue an abusive person and finds himself on the radar of not only a determined police officer named Rebecca (Awkwafina), but also a drug lord named Edward (Ben Schwartz). Combining humor, action, and plenty of gore, Renfield must also confront his growing desire for self-help as he attempts to stand up to his boss and have his needs acknowledged and respected—a prospect that naturally displeases Dracula. What follows is an amusing, chaotic, and bloody adventure that, while occasionally inconsistent and wandering in its storytelling, still finds enough ways to entertain. Cage delivers a particularly over-the-top performance as Dracula, seemingly reveling in every scene he’s in, and it's one of his most enjoyable roles in recent years. Hoult, Awkwafina, and the supporting cast perform well, and although the film takes considerable liberties with the narrative and logic even for a movie of this kind, it still manages to be engaging. Dracula mentions a grand scheme for world domination but receives little more than superficial attention, which would have helped define his character further. The emphasis is on comedic action rather than horror, and it’s evident that the cast seemed to genuinely enjoy their roles; so as long as you are willing to disregard issues with the plot, you might find “Renfield” one of the more entertaining comedies of the year. 3.5 stars out of 5
