A law enforcement officer working undercover in Philadelphia (played by Kiefer Sutherland) joins forces with a Native American man (Lou Diamond Phillips) to recover a stolen Lakota lance that was taken during a diamond robbery. “Renegades,” released in 1989, is a crime drama and thriller largely set within the city’s blue-collar neighborhoods. There's a short segment on a reservation alongside an extended nighttime sequence at a rural ranch just beyond the urban area. Certain action moments feel exaggerated to the point of being hard to take seriously, however, the dynamic between the two central characters is fairly well done. Jami Gertz appears in a minor part. It’s a passable but not particularly impressive big-city cop and crime story. A Dirty Harry film would be a better option overall. Still, if you're a fan of either of the performers, it might be worth watching. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 46 minutes and was filmed in Toronto and Camp Samac Oshawa, Ontario, with what I imagine are some establishing shots meant to represent Philadelphia. GRADE: C+/B-
