Reminiscence feels like a film where people willingly accept a bad deal just to avoid any effort. Set sometime down the road when Miami resembles a modern-day Venice, Nick Bannister—played by Hugh Jackman—operates a service that allows individuals to explore their memories through technology. It’s important to note that these aren't people struggling with memory loss; they simply seem unwilling or unable to engage their own minds – even for something as simple as recalling a pleasant experience like playing with a pet (perhaps acquiring another one would be the solution). The film presents the memories of Nick’s clients in a style resembling amateur videos, which is convenient from a storytelling perspective but illogical because people don't typically recall events from an outside viewpoint. If I were to attempt remembering Reminiscence—a highly unlikely prospect—I wouldn't observe myself watching it. The writer and director, Lisa Joy, attempts, unsuccessfully, to clarify why the memories aren’t shown from the characters' own perspectives with a demonstration by Nick that doesn’t accomplish anything beyond illustrating that random experimentation doesn’t guarantee success. This isn't a particularly strong first effort for Joy, who seems content to incorporate familiar themes associated with her husband and Christopher Nolan. At least in Memento, as the title suggests, the protagonist depended on external cues instead of memories—which are inherently subjective and prone to error; conversely, the recollections depicted in Reminiscence appear as polished as the dream sequences in Inception. Have you ever encountered someone with a photographic memory? This is more akin to a photogenic one.
