I’m not sure this is among Noël Coward's strongest works, but Eric Styles has brought together a capable group of actors that makes this version just barely acceptable. Edward Atterton portrays Lord Marshwood, who finds himself captivated by Hollywood actress "Miranda" (Jeanne Tripplehorn). She, meanwhile, is trying to move on from a previous relationship with her co-star "Lucas" (William Baldwin). Following their quick romance in the South of France, they intend to go back to his family estate, where his mother, the countess "Felicity" (Dame Julie Andrews), anticipates greeting them. This woman possesses considerable intelligence and, encouraged by her playful nephew "Peter" (Colin Firth), chooses to allow events to unfold as they may. That scheme is disrupted when a sudden declaration from her longtime friend "Moxie" (Sophie Thompson) arises, along with the persistent presence of "Lucas," which establishes the foundation for an entertaining, though somewhat predictable, stage comedy. The performers aren't really pushed to their limits here; both the writing and acting are adequate, but lack any real humor or inventiveness, and the ending is entirely foreseeable. It’s nicely shot (though the editing isn't as impressive) and Dame Julie contributes that special something we don't often see anymore. I probably would have preferred seeing this on stage, where it likely would have been more successful – in a movie format, it doesn’t quite succeed.
