Following the deaths of her father, Chris (Scott Eastwood), and aunt Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald) in a car crash, young Clara (Mckenna Grace) experiences some tension with her widowed mother (Allison Williams). This is possibly compounded by her budding interest in Miller (Mason Thames), a popular boy who seems preoccupied, and the presence of Jonah (Dave Franco), Jenny’s recently bereaved husband as he navigates raising his new baby. Jonah stumbles upon information concerning why their spouses were traveling together, which alters their connection—a secret they choose to withhold from Clara. It remains to be seen how long they can maintain this deception, particularly given the evolving nature of their own relationship. The narrative primarily centers on the two teenagers and quickly devolves into something surprisingly corny. There’s an excessive amount of talking, and with Franco pushed to the periphery, it transforms into a standard family drama that avoids confronting significant issues; it handles grief superficially and doesn't strive to develop its central characters, especially Miller (whose final scene was unsettling). While visually appealing, the film lacks substance and would have been better suited for streaming. Clancy Brown’s appearance is jarringly different from his role as the frightening Kurgan—and not in a positive way. It’s a movie one might wish to dismiss or disregard.
