Arnold Schwarzenegger, fresh from "Conan," joins forces with Brigitte Nielsen in the title role, where they seek retribution for the slaying of her family and the devastation of her country at the hands of the villainous "Gedren" (Sandahl Bergman). Their mission is complicated by encountering the overly eager Prince “Tarn” (Ernie Reyes Jnr.) along with his friendly but not particularly bright bodyguard "Falkon" (Paul L. Smith). A series of action sequences unfold as "Sonja" comes to understand that she can’t succeed without Arnie's assistance against the wicked queen and her associate "Ikol" (Ronald Lacey), leading to confrontations filled with sword fighting and acrobatic maneuvers. The film's brevity is a kindness, because I felt an urge to silence the young prince after just a few minutes, and that feeling could likely be applied to the script itself. It’s truly bad. Schwarzenegger seems to be having some fun here, but the rest of the movie takes itself far too seriously; even a student in their third year of chemistry could probably have created better special effects. Nielsen lacks charisma, charm, or any real presence – she simply possesses a physique that might challenge Mike Tyson, and unfortunately, that isn't enough to make this flawed film remotely enjoyable as we progress toward the predictable ending. I imagine it boosted leather sales considerably, but not much else.
