"Red Sonja" feels like an unfinished, action-packed fantasy adventure. It’s obvious that this movie wasn't given much attention or refinement; it doesn’t come close to the quality of previous versions, including the 1985 film. The plot is fairly standard and not particularly engaging. The characters don’t do much to improve things either, seeming rather shallow and two-dimensional. The action sequences, which make up a large part of the movie, seem hastily assembled, like something created by a group with money but little experience. Surprisingly, some of the performances are pretty good, particularly Robert Sheehan's portrayal of the antagonist—though that’s really the highlight. Overall, it's a simple sword and sorcery story that is okay to watch, but has several shortcomings. I think the earlier film from 1985 is much better; compare them yourself and you’ll probably see what I mean.
