It’s a shame that this truly remarkable film hasn't received the recognition it deserves. Warner Bros. Entertainment seems to have missed its value, contributing to its obscurity due to their lack of promotion. It needs to be brought back into the public eye. They should take action similar to what 20th Century Fox did with Titanic, releasing enhanced versions in 2003 and again in 2012. It’s hard to believe a film from 1997 is now available in 4K resolution and 3D! As an initial step, Warner Bros. Entertainment should re-release the movie trailer in 4K quality and launch a significant marketing push for Red Riding Hood, unlike the one they did for Barbie, which didn't warrant it. They ought to champion films that deserve promotion, not the other way around. The primary reason this film isn’t more well-known is Warner Bros. Entertainment’s inadequate marketing campaign; it was quite weak, and their insistence on a PG-13 rating instead of accepting an R-rating led to alterations in the ending for the PG-13 version. This wasn't due to any flaws with the movie itself or director Catherine Hardwicke. In fact, she directed it brilliantly, particularly in the unedited original cut, often called the Alternate Cut. Just because a release isn’t labeled “Director’s Cut” doesn’t automatically mean it’s not the original; the true original is the one that hasn't been altered to meet age rating requirements—the version the MPAA didn’t rate, which is why you see "Unrated" next to it. This unedited version is what's referred to as the Alternate Cut, and they couldn’t call it a Director’s Cut because of the changes made for the PG-13 release. Production companies generally avoid R ratings because they limit the potential audience, which consequently lowers profits. Consequently, Warner Bros. Entertainment pressured Catherine Hardwicke to modify the film for a PG-13 rating instead of an R. This explains why the ending differs between the modified version and the original unrated cut. I think both versions are successful works of art, but I personally found the original one more artistically impressive. My score for the modified (PG-13) version is 9/10, while my rating for the unedited original (Alternate Cut) is a perfect 10/10. It stands as the definitive and greatest adaptation of the Red Riding Hood story, surpassing all others. I’m grateful to Catherine Hardwicke for creating this artistic masterpiece.
