This is fairly good holiday entertainment. *Red One* feels a little stretched out, and I didn’t really pick up on any real connection between the actors, although they all deliver performances that are enjoyable enough and the story provides a pleasant distraction while maintaining a proper Christmas feel. The visual effects were something I found particularly well done; that aspect of the movie looked quite good to me. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans both bring some amusement to their roles. Johnson seems more restrained than we’re used to, which I appreciated, and Evans' character turns out to be the emotional center of the story. J. K. Simmons, even more so than Johnson, is playing a role that’s unexpected—it was almost strange seeing him as someone genuinely good; I kept expecting him to snap at somebody, like he usually does. Kiernan Shipka and Kristofer Hivju are both fine, and I liked their characters. Lucy Liu doesn't get enough to do, and neither does Bonnie Hunt, really. But I can’t find much fault with the acting overall; everyone puts in a reliable performance. To be truthful, I don’t think this film will stick around for very long, but even so, I would still recommend seeing it.
