I had the impression this film arrived in theaters ahead of schedule, though it remains an enjoyable and lighthearted display of Dwayne Johnson’s and Chris Evans’ talents. The story begins on Christmas Eve when Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) is taken from his home at the North Pole. Cal (Johnson), Santa's longtime head of security, isn't happy about being forced into retirement after centuries of service. Along with Zoe (Lucy Liu), he must investigate how Santa’s security was breached and then go on a rescue mission. That investigation leads them to Jack (Chris Evans), who was unaware of the identity of his client. Following an uneasy beginning, these two men have to combine their skills to save Santa before Christmas truly begins affecting those on the naughty list. There are echoes of "Elf" alongside some aspects reminiscent of "Harry Potter," and it's clear that everyone involved is having a good time despite the abundance of CGI and very precisely staged action sequences that blend contemporary elements with mythology in a pleasing way. Simmons and Liu have limited screen time, and while the theme of good versus evil isn’t overlooked, it also isn’t overly emphasized. It might not be a film you'll recall seeing years from now, but as it stands, it serves as an entertaining way for its stars to lift our spirits as the holidays draw near, without resorting to excessive sentimentality or clichés.
