Hearing the sound of galloping horses brings to mind horses, not unicorns. Rodrigo Cortés wrote and directed Red Lights, featuring Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Toby Jones, Joely Richardson, and Elizabeth Olsen. The score is by Victor Reyes, with cinematography by Xavi Giménez. The story centers on a psychologist who questions everything and her physicist colleague; they make it their business to debunk supposed paranormal events. However, the reappearance of a very famous psychic creates complications. I’m hesitant to suggest this film, even though it brings together some impressive performers for what unfolds. For quite a while, it offers an intelligent look at how con artists operate and the beliefs surrounding psychics and faith healers. The main characters have their own problems, and certain truths will eventually surface, with Cortés demonstrating a knack for creating an unusual atmosphere. But when the central mystery is finally explained near the very end, you’re left wondering if that was truly the best they could come up with. In the end, it doesn't quite live up to what it sets out to do or build upon its initial concepts. There are moments of suspense and intrigue related to the subject matter, but ultimately the film feels scattered, muddled, and disappointing as a whole. 6/10
