I wanted to state my feelings right away: I like _Red Hill_. It’s an Australian film, which is a plus. There's plenty of blood and dark skies, another point in its favor. An Aboriginal character with facial injuries actually kills someone using a boomerang—Luke, take note, it turns out it *is* possible!—and that earns it points too. It features fire but not explosions, also good. Greg McLean, who was behind _Wolf Creek_ and _Rogue_, is the executive producer, which adds to its appeal. And most importantly, it's entertaining. Seriously, Steve Bisley appears in this film! (the actor known for his role as Goose in _Mad Max_). Ryan Kwanten (_The Knights of Badassdo, True Blood_) and Tom E. Lewis (_The Proposition_) are also present, playing the main character and antagonist respectively. It’s a bit odd, some sort of Horror/Crime/Thriller/Western mix with a few humorous moments. It isn't intended to be funny or cheesy, just amusing on occasion—like one particular scene where... well, I won’t spoil it; it's quite good. The music is excellent, among the best I’ve heard recently. While some of the more obvious Western elements did bother me—things like quick-draw duels, police officers on horseback and white cowboy hats—I was ready to overlook them, because as Australians we aren't yet in a position where we can afford to ignore what American audiences want. First-time director Patrick Hughes is definitely someone I’ll be watching for, given how impressive this first film is. _Red Hill_ is an inventive, smart, daring, straightforward and thoroughly watchable movie that I’m glad to own. It didn't completely knock me out; it wasn't a totally original experience, but Steve Bisley’s presence on screen and the overall feeling of constant excitement make _Red Hill_ one of the better films Australia has released. It gets a 76% from me.
