It’s difficult to say exactly how much acting Arnold Schwarzenegger performed in this fairly unoriginal crime story. The film shares similarities with John Wayne’s work in "Brannigan" (1975), where he’s sent overseas to team up with a local police officer to bring back a dangerous criminal. Here, he portrays a Russian who must collaborate with the wisecracking American “Ridzik” (Jim Belushi) to hunt down a drug dealer responsible for his partner's death and now on the run. Schwarzenegger seems to be aware of the film’s shortcomings, but Belushi’s performance consistently falls short throughout this rather clumsy adventure. The plot developments are largely foreseeable, and the central joke/premise loses its appeal rapidly. Perhaps it subtly references the improved relations between the USA and the Soviet Union after Reagan's presidency, although the humor occasionally veers into slapstick territory. I never particularly enjoyed Belushi’s style of comedy—which is abundant here—and it’s disappointing that even a writer as typically dependable as Troy Kennedy Martin contributed to the screenplay. It provides easy entertainment and serves as a reminder of how questionable some of our clothing choices were during that era, but beyond that, it's simply average.
