This is a truly wonderful reimagining. Initially, Wheatley’s direction transports us to a gorgeous seaside resort in this rich period piece. The costumes and cars are stunning, and the unpleasant boss figure gives way to a quietly assured Maxim, portrayed with charm and grace by Mr. Hammer. It's fortunate for the lovely (though apprehensive) lady’s friend that she encountered him—or is she? Mr. Hammer’s portrayal of Maxim avoids the arrogance or condescension seen in Laurence Olivier’s 1940 performance; he’s quite likable from the beginning. Miss James delivers a performance as remarkable as Joan Fontaine's did originally. I find this newer, more refined 2020 take preferable to the earlier one. That’s what I anticipate from Wheatley and the writing team—Goldman, Shrapnel, and Waterhouse. The characters feel fully realized; some possess a sense of melancholy. The personalities of Hammer and James' characters evolve in a satisfying way, and the cinematography and musical score are captivating. While watching this remake, I completely forgot about the novel or the first film. It deserves award recognition, if you ask me. I wish I could share the passion that allows some to “walk through flames for…”
