A timid woman hired as a companion, whose name is withheld from the audience (Joan Fontaine), experiences a dramatic shift in her circumstances when a melancholic widower, Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier), asks for her hand and brings her to his impressive home, Manderley. It appears to be a dream come true, but appearances are deceiving. Upon arriving at Manderley, the newly married Mrs. de Winter (who remains nameless) feels like an outsider; Maxim seems distant, and the unfriendly housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), constantly implies that she can never measure up to the memory of Maxim’s previous wife, Rebecca.
